When creating a web site. Why people use web hosts if they can just host on their own computer?

A number of reasons. Because it is not easy to set up server at home. You will need to turn your computer on all the time. Also it will be very slow to host sites at home . Your broadband provider will not allow it.

I would like to suggest following webhosting which I use, they are excellent.

They offer hosting of "unlimited domains" and you will get massive webspace of 600000 MB (600 GB ). They only charge $5.95/month and they offer "a free Domain Name" and installing service called "Fantastico". By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer "Free Website Builder" as well.

Visit the site to check details.

Maybe they don't know? I didn't know that.
When creating a web site. Why people use web hosts if they can just host on their own computer?
There are a few reasons:

1- you may want to shut down your computer once in a while instead of leaving it running all the time

2- a web host often has a faster connection to the internet

3- a web host can handle higher bandwidth than you can at home

4- it's more secure to have it hosted
Reply:In order to host your own website on your own computer, your need to leave the computer on for as long as you want the website to stay online.

Unfortunately for the rest of us, we can't afford the bill for leaving computers on for 24/7. Besides, it's just not as reliable as you think. It's better to leave it to the professionals.

lameo joe it admin my a$$ giving everyone a thumbs down. if you had all that to say about dynamic/static ips then isnt it a little sad that you don't know about programs to auto update the dynamic ip so that it mimics a static ip??..... sad sad.....
Reply:we hosts are more reliable and they have backups in case of a storm. if you're hosting an important website and your electricity goes out or you have an icestorm your website is down.

we hosts have multiple backups and datacenters to make sure your site stays up, plus they have a lot of knowledgeable people that can answer questions
Reply:Two reasons:

1. Web hosts preservs static IP numbers. Eg: when you connect to Yahoo! Hosting it has a uniqe and widely know IP number. If you host your files on your computer and have dynamic IP you have to stan still at your connection. If your connection dies, you gain a new IP number, and no one can see your files unless you say them.

2. DNS server. Simply www.blabla.com style adress can be gain easily by web hosters...
Reply:It can certainly be hosted from someone's home, but the reason most people don't do this is that it's quite expensive to subscribe to a static IP address.

A static IP address does not change, whereas a DHCP-assigned IP does. The vast majority of residential broadband users have public IP addresses that are assigned via the ISP's DHCP server. This is a problem for those wanting to host their own website because whatever website name (domain) you choose will be using your public IP.

Now why is THAT a problem, you ask?

After a certain amount of time, your IP address will change. When that happens, anyone trying to access your site will no longer be able to do so. The site name is linked to the old IP address, and that address is also linked to the web pages on the residential web server (computer).
Reply:I will add one little comment to the (good) reasons above:

Making your machine a server without a very good knowledge of what you are doing leaves it open to hacker's attacks!

Making a site is one thing.

Maintaining a clean server is another...
