Can someone explain to a dummy how much space and/or how large is 20 MG for a web site?

I am comparing web hosting %26amp; site building companies and would like to get an idea of approx how many web pages or how many telephone yellow pages 20 MG would actually take up. Thanks for your help.

I'll assume you mean 20 MB -- I have no idea what 20 MG is! Maybe you mean 20 GB?





If it's 20 MB, it's definitely below average, by a long shot.

I'd say 5 GB seems about the average for cheap hosting plans. 20GB would be above average.





As far as how much can fit in this space, well, that's tricky and depends upon the content you're going to have.





Suppose you were just going to use the webspace as a personal blog. Then it's possible that 20 MB would be enough. New pages, with only text and some small grapahics probably only usually are only 5-10 KB large. Assume 10KB per page on average, then if you had 20MB space, you could have roughly 2000 pages, which is an enormous website. With 5 GB, you could 500,000 pages, and with 20GB, you could have 2,000,000 pages! Whooot! Not very likely though...





Most likely you'd also have some pictures along with those pages. For a fairly big image (say 800x600) that's been optimized (e.g. JPEG compression/quality lowered), you could expect a size of around 30-40 kb. Larger resolution images, or images with no compression could of course be much larger. However, assume 40kb per image: with 20MB of space, that would mean you could fit 500 images, which seems like plenty, unless you're digital camera-happy and post hudreds of pictures per week.





Other considerations would be if you were posting PDF files (which can be very large), video clips (also very large), or large or uncompressed images, etc. In this case, I don't think 20MB would get you very far, as one medium length video or large PDF file could use up the ENTIRE 20MB of space.





So, it totally depends on what you're planning. If you're going to have a simple webpage, used only as a blog, with small pages and a limited number of pictures, 20MB might be enough. But, considering how inexpensive these other hosts are that offer 5GB+ of space for a small monthly fee, I'd recommend against any host which gives as little as 20MB!





All that said, web space isn't everything. The next most important aspect to a plan, in my opinion (besides the basics like Linux vs. Windows hosting) is bandwidth. There's no use in having lost of webspace if the host doesn't also provide enough bandwidth for users to access what you have in your webspace. Keep that in mind when you're shopping around.

20MB, or megabytes is about 6 MP3 songs, or 20 hi-res digital camera pics, or a 4000 page Word document.

Reply:umm 20 megs thats about 10 floppy disk this is the space your host is giving you for your site this is very very low r u sure it wasnt 20 gigs?

It depends on text size, # of graphics, etc. If you have MS Word you can save a document as an "html" file. Then go into Windows Explorer and see how large that file is. 20mb = 20,000kb.

Reply:OK .. there is nothing called 20 MG .. it's ither 20MB and that eaquals about 15 Floppy Disks .. or 20GB and thats very BIG that u dont need to worry about the size ..
