That information is stored in your domain registrar (directnic.com / godaddy.com / internic.com). Find out what the new name servers are going to be. Log into whatever site you registered your domain at and go into the control panel. There should be the option there to change your name servers.

When choosing a web host it's of course important to consider the cost (some hosting can be very expensive) but here are some other important things you should take into consideration too:

Web Hosting Space: Some web hosts will only give you 500MB or so of space. This could be a concern if you are looking at creating large websites.

Bandwidth: Some web hosts will severely limit the bandwidth you can use before you incur extra charges.

Uptime: There's no point in having a website if people can't see it. Does your web host offer at least a 99% uptime guarantee?

Number of websites allowed: If you're looking to host more than one website on your account, will your web host charge you more to do this?

Support: If you have any problems you need to be able to contact your web host quickly and easily to get the problem sorted.

Why would you want to use FrontPage is the first question I'll ask. Second, it throws in a ton of needless code... stay away from that beast... it's evil.

Try using DreamWeaver from Adobe (formerly Macromedia). Or if you're looking for a good free wysiwyg... then EditPlus, jEdit or PHP Designer 2007 are all fantastic if you can code from scratch.

FrontPage is evil... as is all M$ products.

Godaddy labels itself as the preferred provider for adult content.

It all depends what you are planning to do, if you are looking to host pornsites there are lots of hosting companies out there that already set up for this. Hosting a pornsite can be a bandwidth hog depending on if you plan on having clips, movies and other downloadable content. You will pay a premium in hosting fees with strictly adult hosting companies.

I would look at godaddy.com and see what they have to offer, I think you can get a pretty decent package for not a lot of money. If you make it big and have problems with bandwidth or slow loading site because you are getting so many visitors you may want to look at moving to your own server, and it that is the case you will need a to know a bit more.

For a business site, I need a host that can accommodate hundreds, perhaps thousands, of business videos, each approx 1 to 5 minutes long. What kind of capacity/services/capabilities do I need to look for in a host in order to handle such a site? And how much should I expect to pay for this? If anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

It really depends on how much these videos will be accessed. You need a great deal of diskspace and bandwidth. Shared hosting probably will not work for you. You need to do some calculations to estimate the diskspace and bandwidth you will need.

A dedicated server costs $100+ a month.

hi,

i,m new to data bases and i,m just a little confused,

i,m going to build a database for my site which is already online, using ms access, but whilst looking in my webhost, i noticed a facitly called my SQL database, does this mean that my webhost has already built a database that i can use, or do i still have to build my own in access, which i upload to the facilty SQL .

my data base will only be used for collecting clients details, and will also issue a password and user name allowing the client to enter my site, i,m just finding it confusing as to why my webhost has this facilty, or is it just the server that the database needs to work.

Check with your web host.

Most basic web hosting plans only include support for MySql (the name of a database management system) and not MS Access.

In that case you have to change to a plan that supports MS Access or otherwise build your database using mySql.

MySQL is unfortunatly a different technology to that which you require. You can interface a Access Database with MSSQL (Microsoft SQL) but this cannot be used on a Linux hosting package.

Your host would need to be providing you with a Windows based hosting package and a MSSQL server.
Reply:Some hosts allow you to have just ONE database, usually either MySQL or Access.

Access and MySQL are two completely different kinds of database systems, requiring different methods of manipulation.

Since you already have an Access database, why not just use it instead of MySQL?

Once you have learned how to work with one, the other will be relatively easy to learn in case you decide to change at some point.

It sounds to me like you are tackling an awfully ambitious project for someone new to databases. GOOD LUCK!

Reply:Does he have an IEP? What is the school doing to help him if this is the second time he may be held back? He needs individualized instruction if he isn't progressing the way he should be. I wouldn't stick him on a computer if he needs hands on activities. Perhaps flash cards with letters, words, numbers colors etc... Also has his vision been tested, and hearing? Welcome to the wonderful world of programming.

The people here are right, you will need to learn HTML editing software or the core language itself. I would also recommend that you learn scripting languages such as Perl or PHP as they both have tones of examples of the net. Scripting languages will enable your website to save information on your web server (host).

But before you do all of this, go to www.oswd.com, they offer many basic HTML templates you can download, modify (learn from) and upload to your host.

You will need a good FTP program to upload to your host. Most Web Servers offer you a FAQ section which suggest FTP software and how to configure it.

Don't forget that the main HTML file has to be called index.htm or index.html. This is the first html document called when someone enters your domain.

I use an old copy of WS-FTP. You can always go to www.download.com or www.tucows.com and type FTP. You will see hundreeds of FTP programs with reviews.

There is a lot more involved with making a website than securing a domain. All that does is reserve space on a server somewhere so you can download files to it. Now the real work begins, building the website. Your going to need an HTML editor like FrontPage, or Dreamweaver to start building the website. If you have never done this before, it's likely it will take you time to learn.

The domain is hosted on the provider's server. If you've bought a hosting package, then you already have access to a server. The hosting provider should have given you the details of your FTP login in order to upload stuff to your server space.

If you didn't buy a hosting package, then yes, you need a server. The easiest way for you would be to buy the hosting package from the same company you bought the domain from.

PS. DON'T use FrontPage, it's a big steaming pile of poo. You shouldn't have to use "frontpage extensions". Get a real web development application like NVu. Even a text editor is better than FP. Learn proper HTML.
Reply:You have a domain, which simply means that www.whatever.com will go to a specific place on the Internet. Whoever you bought the domain from will also have server space available for you.

If you bought the domain from Yahoo, you get a basic one page layout with minimal options. That's for the basic $1.99 domain name only. You also have the option to have the domain name set up as a redirect to some other space on the Internet. For an extra $8.99/month you can start getting actual server space with Yahoo (ad-free) and then can use Frontpage.

GoDaddy works the same. You get the domain name cheap, and then need to pay a bit extra for actual storage space.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

Whatever company you buy the server space from, make sure you know EXACTLY what storage space AND what bandwidth come with your package. Otherwise you might get nailed for massive fees if you go over bandwidth.

Example:

You get a package with 10GB of storage space and 5GB of bandwidth. You toss up a couple of moives and have all your firends start downloading. Suddenly you use up 20GB of bandwidth in one month. You provider will chare you a fortune for the additional bandwidth used.

The point is, get a decent idea of how the site is going to be used, try to anticipate the bandwidth needs of your site (how much traffic you might get and how much info might be downloaded).

My Internet Explorer was working correctly until a few days ago. Now it still opens normal web pages with no problem but when I try to log in to Yahoo Mail, or my bank, or my web host I get "The page cannot be displayed". So I tried using Firefox and Netscape and they can't open any pages, but IE can still open most pages.

I turned off my firewall. I tried checking my connection settings in IE, but I can't find them. I'm using a wireless router, and I repeat, I can get most web pages (like this one) to work in IE. But log in screens are crashing.

I must've changed some setting on my computer at home, because my computer at work can still open those pages. What has happened?

The way you make money is by selling stuff to customers, in that case, you are responsible for telling the customers how to pay. Paypal seems to be a very popular way.

I registered my domain with yahoo.com; my host is awardspace.com, a free provider. I don't want to use yahoo's forwarding (standard or masked).

So should I do one of the following:

Change the name server with yahoo?

Create an A or MX record?

Transfer the domain registration to awardspace?

Right now my domain could be www.mydomain.com and yahoo transfers it to mysubdomain.awardspace.com, which appears in the address bar. I'd like the final result to be www.mydomain.com, and ideally, I'd like to keep the registration with yahoo. Your suggestions would be appreciated.

That depends on your design experience and capabilities. If you are familiar with HTML or you have experience using design software then the obvious choice is to use an html editing software.

HTML editors I recommend:

- Adobe Dreamweaver 8 - Best professional web editor however it is expensive

- CoffeeCup 2006 for Windows - Best web-design software for non-pros

- Nvu 1.0 - Free web-design software

If you are building a blog you can use something like WordPress which is a free blog system with built in templates.

You will also need a graphic design software, the two best are Adobe Fireworks or Adobe Photoshop however Fireworks is built to work directly with Dreamweaver.

I would always recommend using a design software over web hosting design tools however the choice is up to you and your comfort level plus willingness to learn how to use the software.

The design will not be professional and attractive, if you gonna use the templates they provide be sure that these templates are shared by all users and NOT UNIQUE so you might find some other business using the same layout as your's. That would be disappointing.

Moreover If you are taking your business online I would suggest create a professional site.

According to me a website is your business identity so make it professional so that you can convert the visitors into sales.

On the other hand if you are new to website development then it will take a little long to learn and develop a professional website with current web standards.

CGI scripts are supported by most hosts.

Keep in mind that most hosts offer a platform that suppotts many languages as well. You'll need to make sure that if you have a script in any other language that your host can support it as well.

Hosting is cheap nowadays.

It's up to you how developed a site you want and if you want to use your own domain name. Having your own domain name + your own hosting gives much more credibility to your site and allows you to be more flexible (such as adding google adsense to make money, affiliate links etc).

It normally depends on the Webserver provider, but most of them will allow their customers to use their own registered domain name.

The technical term for this is "Virtual Hosting", as the Webserver redirects users going to a specific domain name to visit a specific site on that server. This allows the webserver to have various sites with various domain names.

You'll need to check with your webserver provider on instructions on how to connect your domain name to your website. Please be aware that it may take up to 72 hours for the Domain Name Servers (the servers that control what IP address a domain name goes to) to make the changes worldwide.

I'm trying to upload images to my website but it always says that it's an invalid image type. I'm using jpg and that's what it needs so why isn't it uploading? I email it to my web host and it works for him but I can't do it on my computer. What am I supposed to be doing? I want to do it myself because if the hoster does it, he charges me for it. When he uploads it, he doesn't change anything after I send it, so it's something to do on my end. Does anybody know?

To upload the picture, you will need a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program. You can download free ones, if it is for personal reasons. I do not know if you have this.

If you have an FTP program, and it still is not working you may have a virus or some other form of malicious software. This could prevent you from uploading. If this is happening, then you should go to a local computer shop and find out if they can help.

You have to put the photograph in your file that is uploaded to your web host. For example, I download a photo to my desktop. Then I open it with Fireworks. Once I'm finished, I save it on my desktop in jpeg, Fireworks, and dreamweaver. Once I paste the photograph, I open up the file where I keep my web site, and move the photograph into that file from my desktop. Then I go back to Dreamweaver, open up local view, and upload it to my remote file. Then I upload the photograph.

1. Web hosts preservs static IP numbers. Eg: when you connect to Yahoo! Hosting it has a uniqe and widely know IP number. If you host your files on your computer and have dynamic IP you have to stan still at your connection. If your connection dies, you gain a new IP number, and no one can see your files unless you say them.

2. DNS server. Simply www.blabla.com style adress can be gain easily by web hosters...

The reason I'm asking is because I am in charge of building a website for a clan in an online game I play. Because the traffic of the site will depend on the growth of the clan, as well as how many members are willing to take part in the site, I DO NOT wish to pay for a site until I know it will be a worthwhile investment.

However the site does need to run well and be available for whatever traffic it gets, at least until it gets sizeable; and oversellers tend to pull their services long before the limits they promise are reached. Any suggestions?

how many mailing lists/database you can run?

Check that you can run the extensions you need. If you need PHP or Frontpage, do they support it?

Can you transfer your domain name (although you don't necessarily have to if it's already hosted somewhere else). Other than that it comes down to the monthly/yearly cost.

all you need to do is put this in your page: %26lt;embed src="locationofmusicfile.type" autoplay="true/false" loop="false or the # of times you want it to repeat" hidden="true/false"%26gt;%26lt;/embed%26gt;

src is simply the location of the file. If it is in a different folder than the page using it, then you should probably put the whole location, such as http://your-site.com/Sounds/song.mp3 or whatever it is

autoplay: true means it'll start w/o having to press play

false means it won't

hidden: true means the user can't see it, and can't control it. So then you should make autoplay="true"

false means the user can control it

and loop: false means it'll play only once and then you will have to press play again

then the number is how many times it will replay

so an example would be:

I run a website that is hosted on a Windows server. I am hoping to shift to a Linux-based server (probably something that runs the cPanel setup, as I am familiar with it).

The biggest issue is that the current website has a static database that is used to serve up information to the visitors. It's the most popular feature of the website, so I want to make sure the transition is right.

This database is an MS Access file. I have a simple ODBC connection to that file, and then I have PHP code that peeks into the file and lets visitors do queries.

My concern is that if I move to Linux / LAMP, I will not be able to make this simple ODBC connection to the MS Access file, and I will need to convert the DB into MySQL. I would like to avoid doing this, as the database comes to me from someone else who operates in MS Access. (I am aware of the possibility of converting to MySQL every time, I just would like to avoid doing so.)

If you can afford to have two systems, one Linux box and another one Windows box, then you can do what you want.

Host your MSAccess file on windows machine and use ODBC to access it.

but what I guess is this will cost you more as compared to one time investment, convert your data from MSAccess to MySql and use it.

I do not know, but there will be a way, you can check source forge for any project if somebody has developed a MS Access support on linux, then your problem will be solved.

Reply:I think you have a couple of options for keeping the data in MS Access.

You could set up the Linux box to host the static content (and any additional dynamic content you develop that does not use Access as a data source) and use the Windows server as an application server. You could do that in several ways - the easiest would be to just host the Access based web application on a different host name, e.g. have linuxbox.mydomain.com and windowsbox.mydomain.com. When someone clicks the login link for the Access application, they're taken to the Windows box.

If you really really need ODBC access to the Windows machine from the Linux box, you can get various ODBC bridging products that are out there. Essentially they forward ODBC API calls over the network from one machine (Linux, in this case) to a Windows machine and make local ODBC calls there (to talk to Access, in this case). I haven't seen a good free ODBC bridge.

Either way you end up needing to care for two OSes instead of one, so think about ways you could make it all work on Windows before taking on long term support for two boxes if one would suffice. Lots of Linux software is also available for Windows.

Referring to features, domain name, and price. This is for a fan site. I plan to use Cutenews on it and it will have quite a few pages [at least ten, to say] and many images [among other things] so disk space, bandwith, etc. needs to be taken into consideration. I'm pretty new to building "professional" sites. Most of what I have done were personal sites where I and a couple friends went to.

If you know any other hosts that are a good please say so, it would be really appreciated.

Reply:I would check out 1and1.com. I've got several different hosting company's, and 1and1 gives the best space/bandwidth/price ratio of any of them that I've used. I chose my first host based on having alot of add-ins, but found out that most of what they were offering was freely available online, and pretty easy to install yourself.

I have used Yahoo and Godaddy and ended up with the host that is listed below because of what they offer and the cost of the hosting.

Their cheapest plan is $3/95 a month but it already includes 1.5 G disk space, 150 G bandwidth, 50 email accounts, and 1 MysQL database. PHP scripts are also provided and are free. My website never became inaccessible since I signed up with them.

I know how to do this in the Microsoft world: I can call the HTTPRequest class to get a page on the server - not on the client. I then want to find the title of the page in the DOM object to put into the new page I'm creating. I'm trying this:

$r = new HTTP_Request('http://www.yahoo.com/');

$r-%26gt;sendRequest();

$page = $r-%26gt;getResponseBody();

However, I'm getting this error:

"Cannot instantiate non-existent class: http_request"

Maybe my web host won't let me use that class. Is there another, easier way to do this?

That error message is probably because there is no "_" in HttpRequest. That page has some functions you can use with the http request class. I've never tried this myself but hopefully this helps.

Note that this class doesn't come with the standard PHP installation and your host probably does not support it.
